NOTE AND SPECIAL REQUEST FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Thank you for stopping by! On behalf of my founding partners and the board of directors I want to welcome you to Transformation Theatre, Inc.
We began Transformation Theatre as an opportunity for theatre artists at every level of their career to have another place to safely practice their art. Many theaters work with new plays and some also provide workshops. Our process is a little different. We are dedicated to only producing new works that explore underrepresented people and cultures. Our process begins with the playwright and dramaturg, then we provide workshops/readings with professional directors and actors and then possibly producing the play adding designers and technicians.
Why new works of underrepresented people and cultures? We believe that every person needs to be seen as a human being first. That while we have different challenges in life, we also share many of the same challenges. We appreciate the efforts of non-traditional casting, however, we want to find new works that are written particularly about and/or by those who are underrepresented in theatre. Rather than attempting to correct or rewrite history, we want to challenge and influence the present and the future.
Most importantly, come see a show and a reading. This is your opportunity to become a part of our process in bringing to life these new plays about your community and to possibly see a reflection of your own experiences. You, the audience, are a part of the transformation.
Like all theatres in the US, we need your help. As an audience member I am sure you have heard this time and time again, but it is the nature of our industry; Ticket sales do not even come close to covering the cost of producing a play. Even our readings have costs associated with them. First we need to rent space since we do not currently have a space of our own (we do have a 5-10 year plan to have our own space), we also believe in paying directors and actors for their valuable time and talent for the reading. Then, there are the additional costs of producing the play. Again we need to rent the space, provide costuming, lights, sound and sets. We choose to hire union and non-union directors, actors, designers, technicians and support staff to provide the best possible production of these new works.
